Did you know?

All Cameron parents and guardians are members of the Parent Advisory Council and are represented by an executive elected at our AGM each May.

The Cameron PAC, run by parent volunteers, organizes events like the Welcome Back BBQ, Pancake Breakfast, Multicultural Dinner, and Staff Appreciation Luncheon each year. We raise funds to purchase library books, sports equipment, and musical instruments. We subsidize field trip buses and provide treats at many school events. These things wouldn’t happen without parents getting involved.

Our executive is a small group of 7 volunteer parents. We volunteer our time on your behalf to raise funds, make purchasing decisions, and organize events for all of our children. Please consider volunteering with the PAC or joining our executive next year. Watch for information in September about how you can get involved.

The Cameron Parent Advisory Council wishes all Cameron students, families, and staff a wonderful summer!
See you in September!

Cameron teachers and staff are superstars!

The Cameron Parent Advisory Council was thrilled to honour teachers and staff on behalf of Cameron parents on Staff Appreciation Day, May 23. Staff were welcomed to the gym on a red carpet, and provided superstar props to pose for the paparazzi. A delicious luncheon was provided by parents, drinks were generously donated by Starbucks, David’s Tea, and Jugo Juice (Lougheed Town Centre locations), and prizes of gift cards and movie tickets were supplied with funds donated by parents.

Thanks to our generous sponsors!

Your 2018-2019 PAC executive

At the Cameron Parent Advisory Council AGM on May 8, the following parents were elected to serve on your behalf as the Cameron PAC Executive for the 2018-2019 year:

Chair: Jen Zerkee

Vice Chair: Shalin Roggeveen

Secretary: Kari Hoskin

Treasurer: Erika Castellanos

Social Coordinator: Andrea Flett

Fundraising Coordinator: Heather MacDonald

DPAC Representative: Emily Zhang

Emergency Preparedness Coordinator: Claudia Paiva

We do not have a Special Projects Coordinator for next year. This executive position looks for and applies for grants for projects like the Greening Project last year and the accessible swing that will be installed on Cameron’s playground this summer. If you are interested in these projects and want to get involved, please come to our next meeting or contact chair@cameronpac.ca.

The PAC would like to thank outgoing executive Maryam Mahdavian for the work she has done during the two years she was a member of the executive, and as a volunteer before that.

AGM agenda now available

Please join us on Tuesday, May 8 for our Annual General Meeting. There will be a presentation on kids and online safety by SafeOnline, followed by a review of the events, purchases, and projects the Parent Advisory Council undertook this year, as well as election of our executive for 2018-19. The agenda is now available on the Minutes & Agendas page. See below for further details, and register here.

PAC ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AND ELECTION

TUESDAY, MAY 8 7:00-9:00PM

At the AGM we will be electing our 2018-2019 Cameron Parent Advisory Council executive.

Without more executive members we will not be able to continue to provide events like the Multicultural Dinner and Pancake Breakfast, or raise funds for library books, sports equipment, and technology.

There are a wide variety of positions available and no experience is necessary. Many positions can be shared by two people, and our executive works very collaboratively so there is always support available. See position descriptions below, and contact chair@cameronpac.ca for more information or to let us know you’d like to be involved.

The AGM will also include a presentation by SafeOnline about Parenting in a Digital Age–this will provide parents with information in connection with SafeOnline assemblies being held for intermediate students earlier in the day.

Doors will open at 6:45. Light refreshments will be served.

PAC EXECUTIVE POSITIONS FOR 2018-2019

The Chairperson presides at all meetings, prepares and distributes the agenda, and is the official spokesperson for the PAC.

The Vice-Chairperson assists the Chairperson and will assume their responsibilities in case of absence, presides over the Annual General Meeting, and accepts other duties as required.

The Secretary records minutes of all meetings, handles correspondence, and keeps all PAC records.

The Treasurer ensures PAC funds are properly accounted for, maintains financial records and books of account, reports on funds received and spent at each meeting, and drafts the annual budget.

The District Parent Advisory Council (DPAC) Representative attends all Burnaby DPAC meetings to represent and vote on behalf of the PAC, reports to the executive and membership about DPAC matters, and liaises with other parents and DPAC representatives.

The Fundraising Coordinator develops a fundraising plan for the year, organizes fundraising events and campaigns, works with the treasurer to ensure incoming funds are handled appropriately, and reports on fundraising plans and amounts raised at each meeting.

The Social Coordinator organizes social (non-fundraising) events for the school community, reports on event planning at each meeting, and recruits and communicates with parent volunteers.

Members-at-Large serve in a capacity determined by the PAC as needed. We are hoping to have three Member-at-Large positions:

The Special Projects Coordinator develops and coordinates projects like the recent Greening Project and applies for funding grants as needed.

The Emergency Preparedness Coordinator ensures that emergency supplies are stocked and communicates with school staff about these resources.

The Communications Coordinator manages the website www.cameronpac.ca and creates monthly newsletters for parents.

Many of these positions can be shared by two people. All parents/guardians of Cameron students are members of the Parent Advisory Council, and are eligible to serve on the executive, except employees or elected officials of School District 41 or the BC Ministry of Education. Executives are expected to attend our monthly meetings.

Please contact chair@cameronpac.ca if you are interested in joining us!

Call for parent representatives – Aboriginal Enhancement Working Group

The Burnaby School District has put out a call of interest to parents of Indigenous students for the District’s Aboriginal Enhancement Working Group. The group provides input and feedback on district programming targeted for Aboriginal learners that integrate academics and Aboriginal culture and/or language.

Ideally, the School District is hoping for one parent representative from each of the four school district zones.

Attached to this post, please find:

  1. Parent Expression of Interest form
  2. Aboriginal Enhancement Working Group Norms, which were co-constructed by group members over the course of this year.

Please note – This group is open to parents of Aboriginal students in Burnaby.

If you have any questions, please contact the School District’s Aboriginal Education Department directly.

Join us for a Coco movie night – April 20!

The Cameron Parent Advisory Council is excited to bring the movie Coco to our gym! This event is free! Bring your family on Friday, April 20 at 5:30pm to watch the movie with your friends. Wear your pajamas, and bring a blanket and a stuffy.

The movie will start promptly at 6:00. Popcorn and drinks will be for sale, with any proceeds contributing to PAC projects. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

New accessible saucer swing coming to Cameron’s playground!

The Cameron Parent Advisory Council has raised over $8000 to fund the purchase of an Oodle Swing for our playground. The Oodle Swing is a saucer swing similar to the one at Cameron Park, and it provides a larger seat and more stability for kids who might have trouble with regular swings. It can also fit 4-6 kids at once, promoting inclusive and group play. More information about the swing is available here.

We received a City of Burnaby Parks, Recreation and Cultural Commission grant of $4000 as well as a Canada Post Community Foundation grant of $2500 towards this purchase. The remaining funds were raised by the PAC through fundraisers like the chocolate sale.

If you are interested in getting involved in planning purchases like this for the school, or in seeking and applying for funding opportunities like these grants, please consider joining the PAC executive! Contact chair@cameronpac.ca for more information, or come to our next meeting!

Help us plan spring events!

The agenda for the Tuesday, March 13 Parent Advisory Council meeting is now available on the Minutes & Agendas page. We’ll be planning spring events including the Staff Appreciation luncheon, a movie night, and PAC’s involvement in year-end events in June. Please bring your creative ideas, your willingness to lend a hand, or just your interest in being involved in your child’s school and join us March 13 at 7:00pm in the school staff room!
